Why this work matters for psychology
It invites questions about memory, attachment, and whether ending a relationship could ever be as simple as erasing its traces.
Psychological connections
Screen stories illustrate how psychological processes look and feel in narrative form; they are not empirical proof or clinical case studies.
Memory Erasure as Premise
The erasure premise offers a contrast point for discussing what ordinary memory does in daily life, without treating the procedure as possible.
Attachment and Loss
Joel's realization as memories fade opens a discussion about how emotional attachment can persist even when a relationship is ending.
Portrayal and accuracy limitations
- The memory-erasure procedure is a fictional premise and should not be read as a description of any real memory intervention.
Questions to watch for
- 1. What does the erasure premise ask about what people keep from a relationship?
- 2. How might the film invite reflection on attachment at the end of a relationship?
In the Psy101 course
OpenStax Section 8.1 supplies concepts of encoding, storage, retrieval, and episodic memory; a teaching question is how fictional erasure compares with ordinary memory functions, without treating the film as evidence.
